Pamella Roland, Matin Maulawizada, NYC Fashion Week
This fashion show was held at the Lincoln Center during the New York City Fashion Week. Lead makeup artist Matin Maulawizada of Laura Mercier Cosmetics tells us how the designer visited New York artist TJ Wilcox’s studio in Union Square and was instantly inspired. The New York skyline inspired this opulent collection and each garment is resplendent with sequins and chrome colors, adding to the allusion. The designer also used New York’s architecture, art deco detailing and the sunsets viewed in the city to accent her vibrant collection. The makeup artist specifically underplayed the makeup used on the models simply because it is soft and natural and highlights the outfits rather than the models.
The fabrics used in this collection are windowpane tweed, lambskin, fur, silk, wool and chiffon. You’ll find tunics, sparkling gowns, silver lame trousers, leather skirts, chiffon blouses with crew-neckline, cocktail dresses, knit dresses, woolen mid-thigh length coats lined with silver lame, silk wool cardigan dresses and strapless ball gowns.
Each garment is so glamorous, so elegant, and yet ready-to-wear and therefore attainable by the ordinary woman. The theme of this collection is defined by the 1930’s New York Art Deco when the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building were being built. Showing off this theme are choice pieces like flapper dress complete with fringes and scoop neckline; full-length Gold shimmering silk gown with spaghetti strap and hanging sheer full-length sleeves; Red Wine fitted crepe back satin evening gown with sheer full-length fishnet sleeves and back and plunging neckline; black satin evening gown with crossed bodice and sheer accents; Jet Black and Steel Silver Maco beaded fringe gown; Filscoupe gown in Jet Black and Beige, with abstract pattern and lambskin bodice; Black cocktail dress with navy soft lame pleated skirt accented with beads and crepe mesh, and; sequin gown in Beige, Pale Blue, Ombre accented with sheer horizontal bands.
Although it would be very difficult to pick only one garment as being the epitome of this collection, I’d hazard a vote on the black leather top, black lambskin mock neck with long hair goat detachable trim, silk satin face chiffon pleated skirt with leather waistband. It is both elegant and yet attainable.
