David Tlale’s Fall 2014 Collection
South African designer David Tlale’s Fall 2014 collection is featured in this episode of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week held in New York earlier this year. In 2012 David Tlale became the first South African designer to have a standalone fashion show under his own name. This trendsetting designer constantly challenges the fashion boundaries and defies convention. He has been quoted as saying that fashion is not for the faint hearted. It shows with his long sleeved blouses with flared hem, billowing sleeveless evening gown with black leather belt and accents, Midnight Blue silk brocade full-length jacket lined with gold, bronze and teal lining, highlighted with Pagoda sleeves, and Navy Blue silk top with crew-neckline and one sleeve, full-length.
David Tlale doesn’t shy away from mixing and outfit with high and low fashion garments. An example of this is the Jet Black leather tank top with flowing Cerulean blue floor-length skirt with Lavender and Beige fern frond pattern. One of the more interesting and daring garments in the show was the Jet Black heavy silk cocktail dress with Ostrich feather lined skirt and Ostrich feather accents on right shoulder and bodice. This signature dress simply screams haut couture. The black dress was elevated from simple to simply sublime with another signature dress consisting of a high silk collar attached to crepe shoulders and long sleeves that ended in a half-palm glove. The dress continues in Black silk from bodice to knee, with an angled panel that flows from left to right and attaches at the hem. This remarkable dress is an architect’s dream.
The one-sleeved crew-necked top is a miss, in my humble opinion, and made even more so by the pairing of Jet Black silk brocade shorts. Other than that, this collection is amazing and captivating.
